The Decorating Tips You Weren't Told About

4. Door Decorating: Everyone gets a white board on their door, so do not forget to bring dry erase markers. Once I even communicated with a friend on my floor while my phone was broken (we called it the board-o-gram, and people on our floor were weirdly invested in our correspondence). You can even decorate your door for holidays with stickers and other pictures.

1. Washi tape: While we all know the wonders washi tape can do to our walls, not many know what washi tape can do to furniture. As lovely as washi tape murals of mountains and diamonds are, simple designs on your furniture can really liven up the boring wood dressers students have.

3. Cranes and Flag Banners: A really cute way to decorate your room without breaking bank at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, is to make paper cranes and flag banners. You can dangle cranes and banners from the ceiling, or lay the banner on the wall.

2.The Fridge: Speaking of decorating with washi tape, your fridge is no exception. Your fridge is an easy place for stickers, magnets, or to tape on wallpaper to dress up your drab fridge. You should also get a storage container to place above your fridge to organize your snacks if you are not living in a suite with shelving.

Bonus: For VMA majors, it is a must to have this sign inside your fridge:

5. Themes: While decorating your room hipster chic is great, don’t be afraid to do something different  with your room. You can have a theme like Stranger Things or you can create a giant blanket fort.

Unauthorized tips:

1. Twinkly Lights: While this is the first thing on all college decorating lists, there is an important factor about Emerson College. You are only allowed to have twinkly lights if it has the metallic tag at the end. So do not make the mistake of cutting that before you get here. If you already did that, then try taping the metallic tag from the christmas lights onto your string of lights.

2. Regulations: Your main question reading this article is probably “How strict are the RA’s with regulations?” Well 90% of the time, RAs are very unlikely to care (ever heard of ‘out of sight out of mind?’). They never do random searches, and only check rooms once in the beginning of the year and before breaks. Tapestries are easy to remove and hide, so do not fear having one to spice up a white wall.  However, fabricated furniture is harder to hide. Scout recommends hiding small furniture with a pile of laundry behind your hamper. However, you may have luck with an RA that does not care.

3. Command Hooks do not work when the object in question is heavy. Just use a hammer and nail and you can fill in the hole with toothpaste, or more convincingly compound (if you need some, I have some).

Bonus Section: Bathroom

As of 2017, Emerson College is officially without communal bathrooms with Little Building under construction. So to truly have a great dorm room, you will need to decorate your bathroom

  1. The first necessity is a toothbrush holder. This will not only add some color to the grey counter, but keep your dental care clean and organized.

  2. A bath mat is extremely necessary; the water creates a huge mess. Plus this will allow for more color in your blue grey bathroom.

  3. Hand towels for hand washing is another necessity. It’s always handy to have an accent towel for easy use.

  4. A hamper for towels will not only separate your towels from your clothes, but also make laundry day easier by giving you a separate laundry carrier.

  5. Finally, you need cleaning tools. More than simple dorm cleaning tools. Even with only two people, a bathroom can still get dirty. It’s helpful to bring a scrub brush and cleaner for the sink.
